Mountain pose, tadasana


Mountain pose is often the first yoga posture of any standing sequence, but can also be practiced on its own in order to improve balance and posture. A very popular yoga sequence, called Sun Salutation also starts with this pose.

As the name suggests, it's a very strong and stable pose – you should feel as stable as a mountain.

When practiced regularly, Tadasana:

  • Improves posture and balance
  • Opens the chest and heart region
  • Promotes peace and clarity
  • Strengthens lower back
  • Aligns the body



How to Practice Mountain Pose

1) Stand straight, head lifted, neck extended upward, chest open, feet hip-width apart (if you have good balance, you can have your feet together).

2) Have your weight evenly distributed in all parts of the feet (make sure that your toes or your heals are not taking more of the weight).

3) Hands are in the Namaste/prayer position - palms together, evenly pressed, thumbs touching the heart chakra (the place between your breasts) and slightly lifting and opening the chest.

4) Be completely present in your body and have your attention inwards.

5) Focus your energy downwards towards your feet. Imagine your feet are extending far below the Earth surface and are grounding you to the center of the Earth.

6) Once grounded, shift your attention to your heart chakra.
With your hands in Namaste position, use your thumbs to lift and open your chest. With this opening, your heart chakra will also open.

7) Take a couple of deep breaths in Tadasana.

Contraindications

Tadasana is one of the less challenging standing poses and fairly easy to perform. There really are not any contraindications. Like with any other yoga posture, if you have serious health problems, please consult your physician. If you have a severe headache or extremely low blood pressure this pose might not be for you.
