It will help you determine which ayurvedic practices, activities -- such as Yoga Poses -- and diet are the best for you. Ayurveda looks at every person as an individual and there is not one-size-fits all approach. 

Ayurveda Body Types (=Doshas)

Ayurvedic Body Types is not really a precise translation of the word "doshas," which means 'things which can go out of balance.' Doshas are energies, which are constantly changing and interacting and often, when out of balance, are the causes of a DIS-ease. Doshas have become to be known as Ayurvedic Body Types in the west and therefore I will be using these two words interchangeably (even though, I have to admit, I prefer doshas as they are much more than Ayurvedic Body Types ;-)

In the Ayurvedic system everything on this planet, including our bodies & minds, consists of five elements: fire, water, earth, air, and space. According to Ayurveda, every individual is a unique combination of these five elements. Every individual is a manifestation of cosmic consciousness. Disease develops when we disconnect from nature, when we forget where we come from and who we truly are.

Vata Pitta Kapha

Ayurveda groups the five elements into three basic Ayurvedic Body Types: Vata Pitta Kapha. Vata dosha consists of Air and Space elements, Pitta dosha of Fire and Water, and Kapha dosha of Earth and Water. About 80% of us are a combination of two of these Ayurvedic Body Types, for example Pitta/Vata. Some of us even have a tridoshic constitution (all three doshas are present equally). Our body and mind are a reflection of the predominant Ayurvedic Body Types.

The Goal of Ayurveda

Each of us has a unique combination of these Ayurvedic Body Types. Our unique combination determines our constitution (Prakruti). Throughout our lives because of our environment, the way we think, deal with stress, what and how we eat, relax or not relax, exercise too much or too little, etc, we get further and further away from our constitution, from who we truly are.

The goal of Ayurveda is to bring us back to our true constitution and restore balance in our bodies and minds. Ayurveda brings us back to our true nature where we experience the state of optimal health, balance, and happiness.
